The possible uses to the ATI Eyefinity are almost endless. The displays can be configured in many ways: for example, three monitors can be placed to create a portrait or landscape mode; one can be placed in horizontal, and two in vertical; six monitors in the same row, or even in two rows of three each.

The interesting thing is that using more than one graphic card in CrossFire mode, users can connect even up to 24 monitors. But were the old limits overcome? This could be a valid question: are there support from applications and videogames or there will be a very few limited number of titles compatible with it?

Even though the unofficial versions were leaked a few days ago, AMD has published the official update for the Catalyst drivers, arriving to the 9.8 version. The American company promises great performances with the new drivers, and support to OpenGL 3.1, RHEL 4.8 and Ubuntu 9.04. Also a number of enhancements and corrections in some gaming titles. For example, with Company of Heroes, the advantage is of 77%.

The control panel is now also compatible with RandR API 1.2 for multiple screen management. The new drivers can be downloaded from ATI’s official website.

ArcSoft has announced that SimHD, the company’s software that executes video upscaling from the standard resolution to high resolution, while keeping the maximum quality possible on the final image, now supports the ATI Stream technology. SimHD is proposed on the market as a plug-in for TotalMedia Theatre, a video software that is compatible with many video formats, including the high-definition ones.

SimHD now takes advantage, with the new release, of the ATI Radeon GPUs, accelerating the upscaling operations and taking the load from the CPU, allowing users to have the possibility of using that tool even with less powerful processors without losing frames.

AMD has made the version 9.6 of their Catalyst drivers available for download. Those drivers are compatible with the graphic cards from the ATI Radeon HD 2000 series on; the support to other versions of Radeon graphic cards wasn’t yet implemented.

The new drivers offer a few optimizations on the performance, but no new specific feature that wasn’t found on the previous versions. There are definitely fps increase on the HD4000 series and optimizations on the CrossFire X configurations, however.

ATI has officially launched their new Catalyst 9.5 drivers on Friday, but the official notes were only released yesterday. Compared to the 9.4 version, there are minor changes on the performance level, with some increases reaching only 10% with some gaming titles.

The Windows Vista and Windows 7 drivers, both the 32Bit and 64bit versions were unified; the release for Windows 7 was also certified by Microsoft with their WHQL certification. The 64bit version also corrects some compatibility problems with the ATI Avivo Converter application.

The new system update for the Mac OS X, the 10.5.7, brings many bug-fix and enhancements, but together with those, also the drivers for the ATI Radeon HD4870 graphic card.

It’s a true update kid for those users that purchased their Mac Pros from the beginning of 2008, since no driver updates were released since then.

Those who wish to buy the card, can do so at the Apple Store. Or any other online shop as well, for that matter.

This time it took ATI only one day to test their new Catalyst drivers, version 9.4, to obtain the WHQL certification for Microsoft’s new operationaly system, Windows 7.

The drivers were never a high point for ATI, both for its delay between one version and the next, and the many problems users found with new releases, being unable to push the hardware to the maximum. Obtaining the WHQL certification in one day shows that ATI has been working hard not to allow nVIDIA to step even further away.

Those who wish to test the new Microsoft OS, now with its Release Candidate version, can download the drivers for their own videocard on ATI’s official driver page.

It’s worth reminding users that the complete WHQL-certified version of the Catalyst drivers (9.5) with support for Windows Vista and Windows 7 should be launched by the end of this month.
