Stalker: Clear Sky
Stalker: Clear Sky is a first-person RPG that is set in a post-nuclear world, where different factions clash with each other daily. The X-Ray graphic engine offers a lighting system that makes interesting dawns and sunsets or the so-called godrays, thanks to HDR and lens flare usage.

Crysis Warhead

Game tests
X3: Terran Conflict
The latest chapter of the space simulator X3: Terran Conflict represents a standalone expansion of its predecessor, which has an enhanced graphic engine and a completely new AI.
AA 4x - AF 16x (Values expressed in FPS)
- 1600 x 1200 - 96.6
- 1920 x 1440 - 90.6
- 2048 x 1536 - 89.1It’s hard to analyze the Radeon HD 5870 from only one test, but the values surely demonstrate that the performance power is there. The values are similar to what a HD 4870×2 could give, which almost confirm the double performance when compared to a HD 4870 single chip.

The heatsink is done in two parts: one in copper that is in direct contact with the GPU, and the aluminium fins that help the system dissipate the heat produced by the components. As most of the latest Radeon cards, the 5870 can also be used in multi-GPU configurations. THe two connectors for the CrossFire bridge are placed on the traditional upper front part. On the opposite side, there are four video outputs: two DVI-I ports (that can be adapted to VGA with the proper adapter that comes with the card), one HDMI and a DisplayPort.

In overall, the components’ position on the card doesn’t differ much from what we’re used to see, with the connectors section on the left, the graphic chip and the memories on the middle and the power supply part on the right. The GPU size isn’t much different from the RV770, which means the 40nm process is capable of offering twice as many transistors. As usual, ATI has chosen to place a metal frame around the chip in order to avoid possible damage when the cooling system is placed.
The memory chips are branded Samsung and have the K4G10325FE-HC04 code: GDDR5 chips with a 0.4ns latency.

The cooling system has a red plastic cover with the ATI Radeon brand and two exits on the side that allow the air to circulate on the components. The back of the card is also protected by another thin cover.
The card is connected to the power supply by two 6-pin connectors, which can be surprising, considering the performances; one would have expected two 8-pin connectors or an 8-pin and a 6-pin ones, but obviously ATI managed to reduce the energy requirements on this card to the maximum.

The card used on this test is the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5870. The box has the usual brand logos, and the logos of the two games included with the bundle. Inside the box we can find the graphic card, the installation manual, two cables for the power supply (6-pin connectors), a driver CD, a DVD with the game BattleStation Pacific, a coupon to get a free copy of Dirt 2, a DVI-VGA adaptor and a crossfire bridge.
The card has a beautiful plastic cover over the entire surface and it’s very similar to the HD 4800, apart from small details such as the dividing middle line in red and the fact it’s no longer a transparent cover. It’s also a bigger card; the Radeon HD 5870 is 5cm longer.
