People are talking a lot about the RV870 chip that ATI will launch in the near future. But AMD has also other plans for chips based on the RV870. The company is aiming to launch the new chip, and then present the RV840 for the medium-entry market, and the RV810 for the lower-entry models. The high-entry market will be featuring a dual-chip card, codenamed R800 and featuring two RV870 cores.

The series that will be born from these products will probably be called Radeon HD 5800. The 5870 should feature the RV870 and a dual-chip R800 called Radeon HD 5870 X2. It’s probable that those models will be launched by the end of the year, while for the RV810, customers will have to wait a little more. There are no other rumors about any technical specification for the RV840 and RV810.

All the cores will be manufactured at 40nm and feature DirectX 11 support.

ATI has confirmed to the Fudzilla team that the RV870 will feature a dual-GPU version that will become the high-end graphic card model.

ATI seems not to break the tradition, then, and will build their fastest graphic card on a double chip, called RV800, similarly to the HD480 X2 that integrates two RV770 chips in one PCB.

The RV800 chip will feature two RV870 chips which will have complete support to the DirectX 11 and will be manufactured with the 40nm fabrication process, the same of the RV740 featured on the HD 4770. ATI would be speeding up the process to present the new chip before nVIDIA presents their GT300. Based only on the official statements, it’s hard to see which one will be faster, but they should be launched around the same period.

ATI has informed that the new generation of graphic cards will feature dual-GPU proposals, commonly known as X2.

The R800 will be based on two RV870 chips, 40nm GPUs and compatible with the new DirectX 11 that will be launched with Windows 7. According to rumors, seems that the new dual GPU will be a direct competition to Nvidia’s GT300.

The R800, as well as the GT300 from nVIDIA, will probably be launched by the end of this year.

ATI has officially launched their new Catalyst 9.5 drivers on Friday, but the official notes were only released yesterday. Compared to the 9.4 version, there are minor changes on the performance level, with some increases reaching only 10% with some gaming titles.

The Windows Vista and Windows 7 drivers, both the 32Bit and 64bit versions were unified; the release for Windows 7 was also certified by Microsoft with their WHQL certification. The 64bit version also corrects some compatibility problems with the ATI Avivo Converter application.

The new system update for the Mac OS X, the 10.5.7, brings many bug-fix and enhancements, but together with those, also the drivers for the ATI Radeon HD4870 graphic card.

It’s a true update kid for those users that purchased their Mac Pros from the beginning of 2008, since no driver updates were released since then.

Those who wish to buy the card, can do so at the Apple Store. Or any other online shop as well, for that matter.

This time it took ATI only one day to test their new Catalyst drivers, version 9.4, to obtain the WHQL certification for Microsoft’s new operationaly system, Windows 7.

The drivers were never a high point for ATI, both for its delay between one version and the next, and the many problems users found with new releases, being unable to push the hardware to the maximum. Obtaining the WHQL certification in one day shows that ATI has been working hard not to allow nVIDIA to step even further away.

Those who wish to test the new Microsoft OS, now with its Release Candidate version, can download the drivers for their own videocard on ATI’s official driver page.

It’s worth reminding users that the complete WHQL-certified version of the Catalyst drivers (9.5) with support for Windows Vista and Windows 7 should be launched by the end of this month.

AMD has announced the fusion of two internal departments dedicated to the development of microprocessors and graphic chips under a division called Products, consolidating the fusion that started almost three years ago.

After ATI’s acquisition by AMD, on July 2006, the two companies have gradually united the forces, optimizing the manufacturing areas and creating the Fusion project which would consist in creating a device that could feature the performance of a CPU and a GPU together.

The union of both teams under one division will allow the company to have a more efficient developing team and the creation of technologic lines that can be shared in the two sectors. The restructuring will also include the fusion between ATI’s workstation chip development team with AMD’s mainstream department.

It took longer than expected, but AMD has finally launched the first graphic card to feature a fabrication process of 40nm. The model is called HD4770, and it adds another model to the ATI Radeon HD 4000 family. This new model places itself between the HD4670 and HD4850.

The core has the frequency of 750MHz and has 640 shader processors, 32 texture units and 512MB of GDDR5 RAM with the clocks set at 800Mhz and 128bit bus. The availability on the cards hasn’t yet been announced.

    Conclusion - Final

As for the temperatures, the values while on 2D mode are definitely enhanced, staying at a stable 43°C with the fan in “auto” mode (9%), while if the user manually sets the fan, bringing it to 30% (which is a highly recommended setting since it keeps the GPU cooled without too much noise), the temperature goes under the 40°C.

When it comes to overclocking, the card doesn’t really go to the famous 1000Mhz on the core with the standard cooling system, but it reached a respectful 970Mhz without causing any trouble. For the memories, the maximum overclock was 1100Mhz.

In any case, another great model from ATI and XFX.
